HELSINKI: Telecommunications company Nokia is planning to slash 1,300 jobs in the country as part of their plans to reduce personnel globally. The Director Nokia Networks in Finland, Tommi Uitto said there is duplication in services as well an in products in Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent operations.
According to Uitto, the co-determination talks will see cuts in the development of second and third generation networks. The 2G and 3G networks markets will decrease sharply.
“The networks are well prepared in their regard .Operators are investing in 4G at the moment in which we are doing well. The aim is now to be possibly strong in 5G,” said Uitto. The telecommunications giant also plans to cut 400 jobs in France according to media reports.
Uitto pointed out that Alcatel-Lucent had undergone tough reorganisation before Nokia made the decision to acquire the company. Uitto said Nokia has about 4,200 employees in France and 7,000 workers in Finland. The headquarters of Alcatel-Lucent will be transferred from Paris to Espoo, Uitto said.
Prime Minister Juha Sipilä described the plan to cut jobs in the country as unfortunate. The premier, however, said that news is positive in the sense that Finnish localities will continue to play a key role in Nokia’s strategy. Sipilä revealed that he held discussions with the CEO of Nokia Rajeev Suri on Tuesday.
