LONDON: Back at February’s Mobile World Congress event, Sony announced a new line of Xperia devices – the Xperia X range. This consisted of three models, the Xperia X, Xperia XA (showing above) and Xperia X Performance, with a different specification and price tag. The Xperia X is based around a 5.0-inch, 1080p display featuring Sony’s proprietary Trilumious technology, a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor clocked at up to 1.8 GHz, 3 GB of RAM, a choice of either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD card slot, a 23 MP rear camera and a 2,620 mAh battery. The Xperia XA offers a lesser specification, having a 5.0-inch, 720p resolution display panel, the octa-core Helio P10 System-on-Chip clocked at up to 2.0 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage plus MicroSD card, a 13MP rear camera and a 2,300 mAh battery. Finally, the Xperia X Performance uses a 5.0-inch, 1080p display panel, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 plus 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD card, a 23MP rear camera and a 2,700 mAh battery.
As part of Sony’s new Xperia X range, the company announced that the Xperia Z line had concluded and the Z5 range would be the last Xperia Z models. As such, Sony fans wishing to buy the latest in Xperia hardware would need to switch to the X range of devices. At the time of the announcement, availability and pricing was very much up in the air but for would-be British customers, last month we saw an
indication of pricing. Today, we’ve seen the Xperia X and Xperia XA devices going up on Amazon’s UK website for preorder. These two handsets will be available on the 20th of May, but the prices showing are somewhat higher than we had originally been led to believe: the Xperia X will go on sale at £549.99 whereas the lesser Xperia XA will be sold for £279.99. In terms of colours; the Xperia X will only be available in black and rose gold, whereas the XA will be available in black, white and lime gold. Unfortunately, at this time there is no word of the Xperia X Performance.
It’s possible that these initial launch prices will change in the next month before the device is officially on sale. It is also likely that the handset price will soften in the coming months as the Sony Xperia X range faces off the competition. Sony must be hoping that in the nearly three months between announcement and going on sale, would-be customers have not opted for something else instead.
