BEIJING: Chinese police have arrested six people allegedly involved in manufacturing more than 200kg of recreational drugs, mainland media reports.

A police raid on two suspicious buildings led to the seizure of 212kg of ketamine – used as an anaesthetic and as a recreational drug – making it one of the biggest cases of suspected drug-making in the city of Liuzhou, in Guangxi province, in recent years, the Legal Evening News reported on Monday.

Authorities started their investigation in November after detaining several drug users at entertainment venues in the city.

They found that the drug users were using “something new”, that was cheap and also being made locally, the report said.

The Ministry of Public Security then ordered local police to make the investigation a top priority.

The police raid, carried out on April 22, also led to the seizure of a further 75kg of drug-making materials, the report said.

The six suspects remain in custody while the investigation continues.
