ISLAMABAD: The Directorate General Customs Intelligence and Investigations has proposed the government to declare smuggling as part of the National Action Plan (NAP).
Sources told Customs Today that Director General Customs Intelligence Imtiaz Ahmad Khan forwarded this proposal after examining an investigation report, in which it was revealed that most of smuggling attempts are being made through border areas of Khyber Pukhtoonkhawa (KPK) and Balochsitan. According to this report, some organized groups are operating their network through these areas. Report says that most of Afghan refugees, who are living in Pakistan, obtained forged Pakistani CNICs and they are involved in most of smuggling attempts with the help of local police.
Sources said that report says that some smugglers are residing in Afghanistan so Pakistani authorities are unable to approach them. An open example of this came during recent past when a smuggler Rahim Gul who belong to KPK successfully managed to fled away with smuggled truck during the presence of customs and police staff. A recent incident which took place in Lahore in which smugglers successfully kidnap the customs inspector who were performing his duty to check non-duty paid vehicles.
So after examining all the revealations it was decided that it is not possible to control smuggling without the help of army, rangers, and FC. Now FBR forwarded a proposal to government to declare smuggling as part of National Action Plan, after which 80 percent smuggling will be controlled.
