DG Imtiaz suggests establishment of Customs Border Force

ISLAMABAD: The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Director General Imtiaz Ahmad Khan has suggested establishment of ‘Customs Border Force’ as US, Australia and New Zealand have already established such forces to curb smuggling in border areas.

The directorate has asked the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to include the suggestion in upcoming Financial Bill 2016-17. It is also suggested that the border force operations to be kept under the supervision of the Customs Intelligence.

The directorate further said that smuggling through borders was controlled all over the country by the border force, adding that ration of smuggling into countries was minor those have border force. The national revenue will increase immensely with the curbing smuggling at borders.

With the existing structure, it was tough to overcome the menace, the DG said, suggesting that forming a border force was necessary to control the smuggling effectively. The main purposed of the force was to limit smuggling at Pak-Afghan and Pak-Iran borders.

Sources informed that the FBR was considering the suggestion for which all aspects of it will be reviewed in detail.
