ROME: Italy’s foreign trade surplus with non-EU countries increased markedly in April from a year ago, as imports fell faster than exports, figures from the statistical office Istat showed Wednesday. The trade surplus climbed to EUR 3.6 billion in April from EUR 2.4 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. In March, the surplus was EUR 3.5 billion.
Exports fell 3.6% year-over-year in April and imports plunged by 13.0%. On a monthly basis, both exports and imports grew a seasonally adjusted 3.9% and 4.7%, respectively, in April. In the January to April period, total trade surplus of the country was EUR 9.7 billion versus EUR 8.3 billion in the same period last year.
