KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Customs Department seized over 6kg of syabu following the arrest of a 34-year-old man at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport here, last weekend.

The passenger had brought the drugs, valued at RM3.5 million, from Kuala Lumpur on May 21. State Customs director Datuk Janathan Kandok said enforcement officers detained the passenger at the arrival hall at 3.40pm after suspecting that a box belonging to the suspect, contained drugs.

“There were six packages in the box, with each package weighing over a kilogramme. “The passenger had with him a one-way ticket and he had visited Sabah previously,” he said, adding that the department believed Sabah has become a transit point for drug-smuggling activities. Thus far, Sabah Customs have recorded two drug cases at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

On May 19, the department nabbed a commercial flight passenger and seized about a kilogramme of syabu worth half a million ringgit at the airport. The passenger, in his 20s, was also arrested on his arrival from Kuala Lumpur after the substance was found in his luggage. “We are looking to establish whether both cases were related and we will continue to monitor movement of passengers at airport,” said Janathan.
