THE HAGUE: Oil giant Shell is poised to shed a further 2,200 jobs worldwide, bringing the total job cuts this year to 12,500, news website Nu.nl says on Wednesday.
Shell, which posted an 80% drop in net profit last year to $3.8bn, says it has to cut costs because of low oil prices. A spokesman told Nu.nl the new job losses ‘will certainly have an impact’ on the company’s Dutch activities. ‘In the Netherlands, we are striving to reduce jobs via a voluntary redundancy scheme,’ he said. Last month, the AD said the company was offering office personnel earning more than €75,000 a voluntary package to leave the company. Shell employs some 11,000 people in the Netherlands.
