THUNDER BAY: Cargo shipped through the local port through May was down significantly from the volumes handled a year ago. The Thunder Bay Port Authority reports that it handled nearly 1.2-million tonnes of grain, along with another 140,000 tonnes of other cargo throughout the month.
Compare that to the month before when the Port handled 727,000 tonnes of grain, and 160,000 tonnes of other cargo. In total, that’s a downturn of more than 400,000 tonnes for May compared to last year.
A large portion of that number is in grain, but Port Authority CEO Tim Heney says there’s no one particular reason for the dip. Heney adds that despite the drop in certain goods, the port is expected to remain a major shipping point for green energy components heading to Western Canada.
