BRASILIA: In May, the Brazilian trade balance recorded exports of US $ 17.571 billion and imports of US $ 11.134 billion, resulting in a record surplus of $ 6.4 billion. The highest balance recorded in the months of May was in 2008: US $ 4.1 billion. The information was given by the Secretary of Foreign Trade of the Ministry, Daniel Godinho during the press conference today in Brasilia to comment on the data.
The result is also positive for the year. From January to May 2016 exports exceeded imports by US $ 19.681 billion, reversing the deficit reached in the same period of 2015, which was US $ 2.301 billion. Godinho noted that the accumulated balance in 2016 is at the same level of income recorded in the twelve months of 2015 (US $ 19.69 billion).
The secretary stressed the importance of the trade surplus contribution to the external accounts of the country. “The positive results of the Brazilian trade balance represents more than 70% reduction of the current account deficit.” He also highlighted the growth of 15.8% of Quantum Index in the year and the increase in the number of exporters. From January to May, over 1,703 entrepreneurs started exporting.
