Govt urged to impose import duty on whey milk

LAHORE: The government should impose import duty on whey milk and powder milk to save local milk industry.

This was stated by University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Naseer Pasha while talking to the media here.

He stated this while chairing a meeting on the federal budget to discuss the implications with particular reference to livestock sector. Many faculty members and chairpersons from poultry, fisheries, animal nutrition and meat technology were present on the occasion.

The meeting also recommended enhancing import duty on whey milk and powder milk at least 75 percent, fisheries, poultry and red meat sectors should be included in the zero rated sectors and they also recommended imposition of heavy import duties on the import of fish feed to strengthen local fish feed industry.

Speaking on the occasion, vice chancellor expressed the importance of such discussion and said that it is the responsibility of universities to explore and debate on such aspects of budget for the larger benefit of society. He emphasized the impact of policy research paper on import of whey milk/powder milk on the budget by which the duty was 25 percent increased.
