Customs Court approves bail for alleged currency smuggler

LAHORE: The Special Court of Customs, Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has granted bail to a suspect, Tahir Bhrwana, who is allegedly involved in a currency smuggling case.

Sources told Customs Today that Bhrwana moved a petition of post arrest bail before the court that was approved by Chaudhary Ameer Muhammad Khan against surety bonds and personal guarantee.

The suspect was arrested from Lahore airport while making an attempt to smuggle foreign currency to Bahrain.

Earlier, he was in jail on judicial remand after the completion of interrogation during physical remand.

The suspect, Tahir Bharwana son of Sikandar Hayat Bharwana, was intercepted by the customs officials at Lahore airport on suspicions. The officials checked his luggage and recovered $7,135 and 16,000 Bahraini dinars.

The estimated value of the foreign currency is equal to Rs 5.2 million, which is illegal to carry while travelling abroad. Therefore, the customs team arrested the accused and registered a case against him under Section 2 (s), 16, 139, 156, (17), 87 (70), and 178 of Customs Act. 1969.
