ATHENS: The 1.9 million taxpayers asked by the state to pay more tax this year than what has already been withheld from their salaries and pensions last year are facing a hefty bill averaging 1,336 euros each.

By the end of this month they will all have to pay the first tranche of the income tax, followed by payments in end-September and end-November.

Figures from the General Secretariat for Public Revenues showed that until Monday 5.3 million declarations had been submitted to the Taxisnet online platform, four days before the deadline of this Friday. This means that another 800,000 taxpayers will have to file their statements by then, or 200,000 per day, a rate impossible for the platform to handle. The record figure of statements processed in one day was on June 23, when Taxisnet welcomed 154,000 declarations in 24 hours.

However all signs point to the ministry not offering a second extension to the July 15 submission deadline, having already prompted objections from the country’s creditors for extending the original June 30 deadline.

Alternate Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis stressed there will be no extension again, adding that taxpayers have a choice between making the deadline and paying a fine.
