Customs busts 20kg heroin smuggling at airport

ISLAMABAD: The customs staff at Benazir Bhutto International Airport recovered 20 kilogram of refined heroin worth Rs 200 million in international market from a UK-bound passenger.

Deputy Collector Naghma e Tehaniat told that heroin was recovered from a passenger traveling to London via PK 785. The passenger has been arrested and FIR has been lodged against him. The customs authorities got physical remand of the accused from the court.

Accused Muhammad Waseem was British passport holder and living in London for many years who was intercepted by customs Inspector Muhammad Sabir for checking of his luggage, the deputy collector said.

The inspector opened his suit case and found some embroidery suits. The officials checked the ladies suits thoroughly which led to the recovery of heroin that was concealed in a technical way. The customs staff perforated all suits and recovered heroin packed in transparent plastic bags.

The deputy collector said that it was a major attempt busted by the customs officials, adding that it was a biggest case in last 20 years in the history of Pakistan Customs at BBIA.

The accused person was clever extremely, as he selected a time for clearance when shift of customs staff were changed, he said, adding that the staff was more vigilant at airports to keep an eye on miscreants who earn bad name for Pakistan.

DC Naghma said that Islamabad Customs Chief Collector Sarwat Tahir and Collector Dr Arslan made a press conference regarding 20kg heroin seizure and appreciated the customs on busting a major attempt. The high ups also announced reward for the customs staff, including Muhammad Safdar and Inspector Sabir those who foiled smuggling attempt.

The authorities concerned said that during preliminary investigation, it has been found that no group is involved in this smuggling bid and it was a solo flight of the accused.
