NEW YORK: There is only one Times Square, New York, the place where the world rings in the new year, and now Google is set to take over the largest electronic billboard ever installed on the iconic, neon-laced strip. This is the largest billboard on Broadway ever.

The billboard, which covers an entire city block, is powered by a Mitsubishi Electric large-scale display (the Diamond Vision AVL-ODT10) that delivers a pixel density of 2,368 x 10,048, exceeding4k display resolution by 15 million pixels.

Passers-by will be able to use Google’s Androidify app on Android and iOS to create their own Android character to play with it on the big screen using their smartphones from Monday afternoon through Tuesday. Those that can’t make it down to Times Square can submit their character to appear on the big screen. If it appears on the big board, Google will send you an email of the character up in lights.

Be it David Beckham stood around in his under crackers, or a steaming cup of Japanese noodles, the lofty billboards around New York’s Times Square have long provided us with many memorable images. Yet, at some point today, New Yorkers will bear witness to one of the largest and most intelligent advertisements ever launched – somewhat unsurprisingly by those bods over at Google.

And as a festive show of goodwill, Google is also donating ad space to charities such as WWF, ensuring that no grown man should feel guilty about standing around playing about on his phone.
