LONDON: The Port of Suva will remain where it is and upgrades and repairs will only be decided once the Port Development Master Plan is ready. Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd chief executive Vajira Piyasena confirmed the Port of Suva was open for use and no portions of the busiest port in Fiji was closed.
“When we receive the Port Development Master Plan we will decide about any upgrades,” he said in an email. “ADB (Asian Development Bank) is still in the preliminary stage of preparing the Port Development Master Plan (report).”
Last month at the Fiji Business Forum in Suva, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the Government and Sri Lankan corporation Aitken Spence PLC were looking at ways to relocate Suva’s Kings Wharf because of its weakening foundation structure. He said three quarters of the Suva port could not be used because of its weak foundation structure.
“The foundation is weak and it cannot handle the load and as you can see the containers are on one side of the port,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. He said container ships now did not berth at the Holiday Inn side of the port. “We can’t handle the load. That port was built decades ago and again this is one of our issues,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
