ISLAMABAD: In bid to further broaden tax net, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has traced out 5.6 million rich tax evaders from different data bases.

The revenue authority identified such non-taxpayers from several data base sources, including motor vehicle registration authorities, educational institutions, purchase of immoveable properties, electricity distribution companies and automobile manufacturing companies.

According to the FBR data, only 3.6 million or 2 per cent people pay taxes out of the country’s total 190 million population. As many as two million non-taxpayers were identified as commercial/industrial electricity subscribers and 975,771 were recognised from Motor Vehicles Registration Authorities of various cities.

The FBR traced out 609,801 non-taxpayers from the Nadra data, and 588,843 were detected based on the data of sale/purchase of immovable properties (Registration Authority). Likewise, it collected data of 301,773 non-taxpayers from the cell phone companies and of 271,746 from automobile manufacturing companies.

The FBR identified 221,806 professionals like doctors/engineers/lawyers. The documents further show that FBR also collected data from Sui Gas, private construction companies, school/college fees, salary cases, banks, Pakistan Engineering Council and withholding statements.

The documents showed that only two percent of the Pakistan’s population pays taxes, which is far less than other countries like Australia, US, UK, Japan and India.
