WASHINGTON: The Director General of GPHA, Richard Anamoo has described the ports of the country as safer places to do business over the past years due to some security measures put in place by the Port Authority.
According to him, the Port authority will in the coming weeks deploy some surveillance equipment to improve security of the port and the country at large. “We will be deploying additional facilities that we can explore and keep surveillance of the sea and the Port from about 100miles away in the air. Speaking at the pulling out ceremony for the former Port Security Manager, Lt. Col. Timothy Ba-Taa-Banah, the Director General of GPHA, assured that personnel of the Port security would be trained to keep command of the new facilities aimed at ensuring security at the port.
“You can sit in your control room and be able to monitor 100miles away and stay in the air for over 24hours and therefore ensure security of the port and the sea,” he averred. He commended the cordial relationship that had existed between the Ghana Arm Forces and the Port Authority which had contributed to the Port of Tema being a safe place to do business. Lt. Col. Timothy Bata-Bana, became the Port Security Manager in October 2012 and his dedication and commitment to work have been applauded by the Port Authority.
Part of a citation presented to him acknowledged a ruthless fight he embarked on against the stowaway menace which led to a reduction in the canker. Lt. Col. Ba-Taa-Banah reminded personnel of the port security that they constitute the first line of defense for any attack on the nation that will come through the Port, hence, the need for them to always remain vigilant and poised for action.
He charged the personnel to be disciplined and professional in their dealings in order to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive at the Port. The new Port Security Manager, Lt. Col. Nana Antwi Awua-Darkwa promised to sustain and improve upon the achievements of his predecessor, especially in the fight against terrorism and stowaways.
