WASHINGTON: University of Washington Researchers creates a contact lens with an LED display the contact lens device has only a single pixel of information.
The researchers said that it could be developed to display more complex information such as emails, just one third of a millimeter in diameter. The prototype for the 3D printer costs about $20,000 to create meaning that large scale production is still some way off.
Researchers said that it’s not difficult to build a display in a contact lens, solid parts and then placing them on a tiny polymer disk is a very difficult task. The 3D printer, or 3D quantum dot LED printer to be more accurate, has made this task a lot easier.
The whole thing is then fused to the surface of the lens via the gum layer, which is activated by UV light. The process is problematic because it requires a lot of power, which is provided wirelessly via an antenna embedded in the lens.
