KHLONG HAT: A Cambodian woman has been arrested for smuggling counterfeit Thai cigarettes worth about six million baht into Thailand after tripping a border alarm in Khlong Hat district.

Paramilitary rangers rushed to Sripen Road upon hearing the security alarm on Monday afternoon. They found a man and a woman carrying boxes along the border road into Thailand. On seeing the rangers the pair abandoned the goods and fled into a jungle, but the woman was caught.

She was identified as Wi Raya, 54, a Cambodian national. A total of 18 boxes containing 9,000 packs of cigarettes falsely packaged as Thai brands – Krong Thip, Failing Rain and Wonder –  were found abandoned in the area.

Ying Singhawiboon, chief of Sa Kaew excise office, said the seized cigarettes had a street value of 6.6 million baht.

Col Chaichanatcha Wajarat, chief of the 13th ranger task force, said electrical wires connected to alarms had been placed at vulnerable areas along the border. If intruders  step on the wires it sets off an alarm that can be heard at the nearby military post. The seized cigarettes would be handed over to Khlong Hat police.
