MADRID: Bananas, apples and watermelons lead the way as the country brings in greater volumes of fruit and vegetables in the first half

Fruit imports totaled 816,837 tonnes, at a value of €816m, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise from the Ministry of Economy, processed by Fepex.

Import growth extended to virtually all products, led by bananas with 148,188 tonnes (+ 31 per cent), apples with 127,926 tonnes (+ 23 per cent), watermelons at 50,370 tonnes (+ 23 per cent), avocados with 48,343 tonnes (+ 88 per cent), pears with 39,821 tonnes (+ 39 per cent) and lemons with 19,502 tonnes (+ 258 per cent).

The main importing regions in order of importance were Catalonia, Andalusia, Madrid and Valencia, Fepex reported.
