Sri Lankan tea exports fall 10% in July

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan tea exports fell 10% or by three million kilos to 25.7 million kilos in July 2016 from a year ago with all main categories – bulk tea, packeted tea and tea bags – showing a decline, brokers said.

Total revenue realized too of Rs.15.6 billion show a decrease of Rs.1.3 billion compared with Rs.16.9 billion of July 2015, Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said.  “However the average FOB (free on board) value per kilo of Rs.609.33 for July shows a gain of Rs.20.77 when compared to Rs.588.56 of July 2015.”

The brokers said that the January – July cumulative exports for 2016 of 172.1 million kilos too show a decrease of 8.1 million kilos compared with the same period in 2015. “Tea bags have shown a growth year on year whilst packeted tea and bulk tea show a decrease,” the brokers said.
