KARACHI: The Post Clearance Audit has detected another evasion of duty/taxes to the tune of Rs 8.28 million by M/s Ericsson Pakistan Private Limited on import of multipurpose batteries and power backup equipments.
Sources said that the scrutiny of import data of telecom batteries use for telescope exchanges falling under PCT Heading 8507.2010, it has been observed that certain mobile communication companies imported multipurpose batteries and power backup equipment, evidently not for the use in telephone exchanges under this PCT heading, while such batteries are correctly classifiable under PCT Heading 8507.2090.
Thus by mis-declaring these multipurpose batteries under PCT Heading 8507.2010, the importers made a deliberate and willful attempt to evade duty/taxes, the sources said, adding that M/s Ericsson Pakistan (Private) Limited also imported telecom batteries for use in telephone exchange by mis-declaring their classification.
In this way of mis-declaration of classification, M/s Ericsson Pakistan with the active connivance of its clearing agent, M/s Saspak Cargo Pvt Ltd allegedly evaded/short paid Rs 8.28 million, they revealed.
The contravention report has been forwarded to the Customs Adjudication-I collector for initiating adjudication proceedings in the case.
