Sports betting increases 16% in Denmark during 2Q

COPENHAGEN: Sports wagering is accounting for an increasing percentage of total betting and online gaming revenue in Denmark, according to the country’s regulator for the sector, Spillemyndigheden.

The latest quarterly figures for the country, covering the three-month period through to the end of June, showed that sports betting now accounts for 65.5% of total revenue, more than the 63.5% it was responsible for in the first quarter.

However, Spillemyndigheden noted that land-based betting fell by 14%, while online was also down by 4%.

Total betting and online gaming revenue in the three-month period amounted to DKK935 million (€125.7 million/€140.6 million), up 16% on the second quarter of last year, but down by 4% on the opening three months of this year.

Online casino generated revenue of DKK355 million, up 20% on last year and 3% on the first quarter, while online poker remained flat on at DKK40 million on a year-on-year basis, but down on the opening quarter of 2016. Revenue from sports betting totalled DKK540 million, which is 15% higher than the amount collected in the corresponding period last year, but 7.6% less than in the first quarter of this year.
