Customs court extends judicial remand of cell phone smuggler

LAHORE: The duty judge of the special federal court of customs taxation and anti smuggling has approved extension in judicial remand of an accused who was booked by the customs authorities from Allama Iqbal International airport while making attempt to smuggle cell phones from China to Lahore.

Earlier the investigation and Prosecution team of Customs Lahore had presented the accused Naveed Bhatti before the special court and asked for physical remand of five days to investigate further regarding smuggling and other persons involved in his attempt smuggling. After completion of physical remand court sent him to jail for judicial trial that is extended again for 14 days.

Customs sources told Customs Today that Naveed Bhatti was arrested by the Customs Preventive when they seized 170 android mobile phones of assorted types from his luggage at Lahore airport. The passenger was coming from China, sources told Customs Today.

On suspicion, the customs authorities detained the accused Naveed Bhatti while he was using green channel and asked him that if he had anything illegal.

The mobile phones were hidden in bottles of water which the passenger claimed that he brought that water from Saudi Arabia, it was added. The sources said that the total value of the mobile phones has been estimated at Rs.5 million.

Customs authorities confiscated the mobiles pones and registered case against him and further prosecution is underway.
