Customs Court adjourns worth Rs 5m cell phones’ smuggling case

LAHORE: The Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has adjourned hearing of cell phones smuggling cases involving Rs 5 million.

During last hearing, the court had approved extension in judicial remand of the suspect who was booked by the customs authorities from Allama Iqbal International Airport while making attempt to smuggle cell phones from China to Lahore.

Earlier, the Customs Investigation and Prosecution team had presented the suspect before the special court and asked for physical remand of five days to interrogate him and other persons involved in the smuggling. After completion of the physical remand, the court sent him to jail for judicial trial that was extended again for 14 days.

As per details, the Customs Preventive officials intercepted the suspect and seized 170 android mobile phones of assorted types from his luggage at Lahore airport. The accused was using green channel to clear the cell phones.

The mobile phones were hidden in bottles of water which the passenger claimed that he brought these water bottles from Saudi Arabia. The value of the mobile phones has been estimated at Rs 5 million.
