Courtney & Nelson’s profits decrease 4% at Northern Ireland

DUBLIN: A Northern Ireland sweets distribution company has reported a 4% fall in turnover to £16.6m for 2015 in its latest accounts. Courtney & Nelson, run by David and Pamela McWilliams, supplies confectionery, tobacco and some grocery products to independents shops, schools and cinemas.

Pre-tax profits were down 11% from £510,379 to £450,912. At £16.2m, UK sales accounted for most of the revenue, though £400,000 in sales derived from EU markets. The firm is based at Boucher Crescent in south Belfast.

In a strategic report, the directors said they were pleased with the company performance, but added: “The market for the distribution of confectionery, tobacco and grocery products remains very competitive.”

And it said it managed credit risk by checking customers’ credit history and by monitoring customers’ credit limits.Staff members fell slightly from 37 to 35 at the firm, which has been in business since 1960.
