Customs Court grants bail to suspects in smuggled cigarettes case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted bail to suspects, Muhammad Nabi and Khaliq Dar, who were allegedly involved in the business of non-duty paid/ smuggled cigarettes.

During the hearing, the counsel for the accused filed bail applications and argued that accused were innocent and have been falsely implicated in this case. Therefore, court may grant them bail. However, the counsel for the department argued that the prosecution has provided all evidences against accused persons, therefore, court may reject their bail applications.

After hearing the final arrangements, court granted bail to accused persons namely Muhammad Nabi and Khaliq Dar against the surety bonds of Rs200,000.

According to the prosecution, a team of Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) Hyderabad raided near Shahbaz Medical Store, Hirabad, Hyderabad and recovered non-duty paid smuggled foreign origin cigarettes and Indian gutkha, valuing to Rs. 17832500 involving duty and taxes to the tune of Rs 17467770.

According to the prosecution, Syed Asmatullah, Shah Muhammad, Haji Fazal and Naseerullah are declared absconders in this case.
