FBR mulls over plans to introduce punishments for tax evaders

KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is mulling over to make amendments to Custom Act, 1969 in order to introduce punishments for tax evaders, it is learnt here.

Sources informed Customs Today that the FBR high ups, in a recent meeting held at the FBR Headquarters, decided to amend the Act with the approval of the Ministry of Finance.

FBR Chairman Nisar Mohammad Khan, in the meeting, asked the Customs Department to make proposals in connection with amendments to the Act and presents before him within a month, the sources said.

Responding to a query, the sources further informed that the FBR has received several complaints at regular intervals regarding the tax evasion at different collectorates and field formation across the country.

Reacting upon the cases related to the tax evasion, the FBR urged the finance ministry and other authorities concerned of the federal government in order to make some amendments and introduce some punishments for the tax evaders.

“The government authorities have asked the FBR to come up with some comprehensive documented proposals related to amendments to the Customs Act, 1969 in order to curb tax evading practices,” the sources added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the taxpayers and business community have also welcomed the step taken by the FBR authorities in order to make amendments to the Act for tax evaders.
