Customs Court awards imprisonment to accused involved in smuggling of liquor

KARACHI: Custom Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded five month and four days imprisonment along with Rs 200,000 fine each to suspects, Noor Muhammad, Rahemullah, Musafir, Sabsal, Muhammad and Murad, who are involved in smuggling of 6,400 bottles of foreign origin alcohol and 6,000 cans of foreign origin beer. “If fine amount is not paid the accused persons shall suffer for six months more imprisonment,” the court said.

During the hearing, the accused appeared before the court and filed applications for pleading guilty and voluntarily placed them at the mercy of the court.

After the confession of the convicts, Special Judge Customs Taxation & Anti-Smuggling Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi counted 5 month and 4 days from when accused persons were arrested as their imprisonment. The accused were arrested on May 5, 2016 and were released on bail on September 9, 2016.

According to the prosecution, on credible information, officials of the Pakistan Marine Security Agency intercepted a wooden launch and recovered 6400 battles of foreign origin liquor of assorted brands and 6000 cans of foreign origin beer of assorted brands and handed over the same and accused persons to the customs authorities.

After the formalities, case was registered against above named accused persons under section 156 (1) (8) & (89) of the Customs Act, 1969 registered by Anti-Smuggling Organization headquarter NMB, Wharf, Karachi.
