Five arrested for liquor smuggling

CHANDIGARH: Cracking a whip on liquor smuggling in slum areas, police on Monday night arrested five persons, including a woman, and recovered about 200 bottles of country made liquor from their possession. The crackdown came following after the two murders at Colony No 4 and Ram Darbar in the last one week.

The arrested have been identified as Tipu, Sanjay of Colony No 4, Ravinder of Ram Darbar, Bhajan Lal of Sector 37 and a woman, who was arrested near the dividing road of Sector 55/56.

On September 15, a woman was stabbed to death over her refusal to give water to an alcoholic at Colony No 4 while a man was stabbed to death by a group of drunk youths at Ram Darbar on September 25.

According to sources, the trade of illegal liquor in slum areas and rehabilitation colonies has become lead to several crimes. On August 3, an 18-year-old youth was murdered in broad daylight reportedly due to an old rivalry linked to the sale of illegal liquor in a colony in Sector 25. Chandigarh IG Tajender Singh Luthra has instructed all station house officers (SHOs) to crack a whip on the trade of illegal liquor throughout the city.

Meanwhile, a man, identified as Ram Karan of Sector 22, has been arrested for consuming liquor at a public place.
