LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to the petroleum ministry and others for November 15 in a petition challenging imposition of sales tax on petroleum products.
Justice Ayesha A Malik issued notices in a petition filed by Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Mian Mehmood-ur-Rashid.
Earlier, petitioner’s counsel Shiraz Zaka, arguing before the court, submitted that the federal government could not impose sales tax on petroleum products without approval from the parliament, as per Article 77 of the Constitution. However, 17 per cent sales tax was being charged on petroleum products without seeking approval from the parliament, he added. The court, after recording initial arguments, issued notices to respondents and sought reply.
