Additional Director Ambreen appointed to investigate tiles smuggling case

SIALKOT: The Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation has appointed Additional Director Ambreen Tarrar as inquiry officer in Iranian tiles smuggling case.

As per details, around two year ago a team of Gujranwala Customs Intelligence under the supervision of Superintendent Saifullah and Investigation Officer Majid Raza raided two godowns of Sheikh Zakria and Usman Ghani alias Azmat Butt near Haji Murad Trust Hospital Gujranwala.

The officials had recovered a huge quantity of Iranian tiles from the warehouse but the team did not register cases against the accused persons and returned tiles to Sheikh Zakria and Usman Ghani.

When the matters was come into the notice of the director general, he transferred Superintendent Saifulla and appointed Muhammad Akmal as superintendent, who registered two cases against Sheikh Zakria and Usman Ghani. But Muhammad Akmal was also transferred to Rawalpindi on routine process.

When Muhammad Rauf Farooqi was appointed as superintendent, he reviewed the record and arrested a suspect Sheikh Zakria taking stern action, while another accused is released on bail from a court concerned till October 8.

Officials said that Sheikh Zakria evaded a huge amount of duty/taxes on the tiles, which were brought into country without payment of leviable taxes. Now, the Customs Intelligence has appointed an inquiry officer in order to conclude the case on an early basis.
