ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan will resume hearing of the Panama leaks case on November 1.
The case will be heard by a three member bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali.
On Thursday, the apex court served notices to the Prime Minister, to Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, Maryam Nawaz, Captain Safdar and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, as it began hearing five petitions regarding the Panama Papers which have overshadowed political landscape of the country for the last several months.
The apex court also issued notices to Imran Khan, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman, NAB chairman, ECP, Cabinet Division, Ministry of Interior and others.
A petition filed by the PTI Chief demands that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar be stopped from working in government. Meanwhile, an inquiry into allegations in the Panama Papers against the prime minister and his family must be launched.
Another petition filed by the Jamat-e-Islami Chief Siraj ul Haq demands that all the allegations against the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) be asked to investigate all Pakistani companies named in the Panama Papers. Sheikh Rasheed has demanded that a commission be formed to investigate the allegations in the Panama Papers.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is reported to be consulting constitutional law experts on the Panama Papers. The PM has rejected the option of challenging the maintainability of the petitions.
In a statement, the prime minister has welcomed the decision by the Supreme Court over the Panama Papers, adding that he has faith in the Constitution.
