DUBLIN: A torpedo-shaped container that washed up on the western coast of Ireland and lay there for months was hiding 75 kilos of cocaine, officials said. Agents inspected the rusty metal canister after receiving a tip from the public about the suspicious item on a remote beach in County Clare, according to Irish Tax and Customs.
The investigators broke open the container and discovered roughly 165 pounds of cocaine worth more than €5 million, or $5.4 million, inside, the agency’s Revenue division announced Tuesday. Officials posted photos of the stacks of sealed bricks of coke, some of which bore the logo of Playboy magazine.
“The concealment may have been attached below the waterline of a cargo ship or other maritime vessel; however, it is not possible at this stage to say either where the drugs originated, or their intended destination,” Revenue officials said in a statement.
