Custom court awards 4 months imprisonment, Rs 1m fine to suspect in gold smuggling case

KARACHI: Custom (Taxation & Anti-Smuggling) Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded four months imprisonment along with Rs 1 million fine to the accused person namely Sohail Mosa, who was arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle more than one kilogramme gold from Dubai to Karachi.

During the hearing, counsels for the defense and anti-smuggling organisation completed their final arguments. Counsel for the defense stated that the accused person is innocent and he was falsely implicated in the case, therefore, the court may acquit the applicant. However, counsel for the Custom Department said that prosecution has sufficient evidences which have been produced before the court, therefore, the court may announce punishment.

After the final arguments, the court awarded four months imprisonment along with Rs 1 million fine to the accused person.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information, staff of the anti-smuggling organisation intercepted the above named accused person and during the examination his bag, more than 1 kg gold was found from his possession. After the formalities, case was registered by anti-smuggling organisation against accused Sohail Mosa.
