WASHINGTON: Dock workers at the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, the largest port in Scandinavia, went on strike on November 15, 2016 according to The Local SE. The strike is reportedly due to a demand for better working hours and fairer pay for the Dockers; the dock workers’ union announced the strike on their Facebook page, which began at 2pm local time.
Sveriges Hamnar, of Ports of Sweden, heavily criticised the action, which will mean only one-third of the ports usual container traffic will be able to be handled, this is a large amount considering that half of all container traffic for Sweden passes through Gothenburg.
Joakim Kenndal, Press Chief at Volvo Group, said: “We have made short-term plans and if the strike is limited to three days we can maintain production, but after three days we don’t know.”This news comes after PTI announced plans are in place to move the freight terminal currently located in the city centre of Gothenburg to the Port of Gothenburg. The switch will allow a higher proportion of transport by rail instead of road.
