WASHINGTON: Montreal’s Port Authority has opened a new container terminal in the Viau district along the St Lawrence River. The new facility will have a capacity for handling 450,000 teus initially and the possibility to increase by 150,000 teus with a potential expansion that would include a second berth and increased container reception space. Operated by Termont Montreal, the facility takes the total annual capacity of the Port of Montreal to 2.1m teus.
The new terminal has two post-Panamax gantry cranes and a container yard with five rubber-tyre gantry cranes. The Port of Montreal is Canada’s second-largest container port – after Port Metro Vancouver – and fifth largest in North America. It handles one third of imports from Europe to the east coast of North America.
