TOKYO: The US dollar surged to a fresh more than 7-year in the upper 119 yen range early Thursday in Tokyo.
At 9 a.m., the dollar fetched 119.87-93 yen compared with 119.74-84 yen in New York and 119.22-23 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.2311-2312 and 147.58-62 yen against $1.2306-2316 and 147.42-52 yen in New York and $1.2373-2374 and 147.52-56 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
Overnight in New York, the dollar rose to the upper 119 yen level after data showed greater-than-expected growth in the U.S. non-manufacturing sector in November, giving further evidence of robustness in the world’s largest economy in contrast to flagging Japan.
