Custom court awards 19 days imprisonment to 2 suspects in currency smuggling case

KARACHI: Custom Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 19 days imprisonment and Rs 150,000 fine to accused persons namely Fahad Tayyab and Aamir Hussain on pleading guilty. The suspects were arrested while attempting to smuggle contraband foreign currency from Dubai to Karachi.

During the hearing, investigation officer of the case produced the accused persons before the court and counsel for the accused persons filed applications for pleading guilty. Therefore, court charged frame on both the suspects and convicted them for 19 days imprisonment already undergone and Rs 150,000 fine. In default of the payment of fine, they shell suffer simple imprisonment for further two months. Both the accused persons were arrested on November 4, 2016 and were sent to jail the same day.

According to the prosecution, on informed that on a credible information on mid night of 3th and 4th  November, 2016 staff of the customs authorities intercepted the accused persons and during the examination recovered 1, 50, 000 Saudi Riyal from their possession.

Investigation officer had informed the court that during the investigation, it was proved that the above named accused persons are involved in attempting to smuggle contraband foreign currency tentative value of Rs. 42, 00, 000.

He further said that after the fulfilling all formalities case was registered against them as violation of section 2 (s) and 16 of the custom act 1969, punishable under clauses (8) (89) of the 156 (i) ibid read with notification of State Bank of Pakistan.
