Canadian pea exports continue to run at strong pace

OTTAWA: Canadian pea exports continue to run at a strong pace, with weekly exports of 62,600 tonnes reported by the Canadian Grain Commission during the week ended November 27.

Total pea exports to date, of 1.65 million tonnes, are running about 400,000 tonnes ahead of the pace seen at the same point the previous year.

Statistics Canada releases its latest production estimates on December 6, and industry participants will be watching the pea and lentil numbers closely. Average trade guesses place the pea crop at about 4.8 million tonnes and lentils at 3.3 million.

Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 63 cents per pound in Western Canada, while red lentils are bid up to 32.5 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data.

Green pea prices range from C$8.00 to as high as C$9.50 per bushel in Western Canada, rising by about fifty cents per bushel at the top end over the past week. Yellow peas range from C$6.85 to C$9.00 per bushel.

Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 65 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data.
