Customs Court approves judicial remand of suspects involved in smuggling of high speed diesel

KARACHI: Acting judge of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Shazia Asif has sent two suspects, Israr Khan and Azeem, to the Central Jail on judicial remand until January 5, 2017. The suspects were arrested while attempting to smuggle 16, 000 liters non-duty paid high speed diesel.

The court also directed the investigation officer to complete investigations and filed charge sheet on the next date of hearing.

During the hearing, Investigation Officer Irfan Ghani produced the suspects before the acting judge and informed that a team of the Anti-Smuggling Organization intercepted an oil tanker bearing registration no SWN133 on Super Highway near Toll Plaza Hyderabad on December 23, 2016. The driver of the oil tanker, Israr Khan and cleaner Azeem, were asked to produce the legal documents of the oil. However, they did not produced any lawful documents regarding the legal import of diesel.

Investigation Officer Irfan Ghani further informed the court that after formalities, the oil tanker and the suspects were taken into the custody. An FIR was lodged by the customs authorities under section 2 (s) 16 & 157 of the Customs Act, 1969 read with section 3 (1) of imports & export (control) act, 1950 punishable under clauses (8) (89) of section 156 (1) of the Customs Act. 1969. The Customs Court will start regular hearing of this case from January 5, 2017.
