OTTAWA: Nearly $36,000 in cash was seized from a U.S. woman entering Canada at the Rainbow Bridge in late November.
Canada Border Services officers were questioning a woman from the U.S. who was visiting Canada and had nothing to declare on Nov. 26. During questioning, officers noticed a bulge in the woman’s shirt as well as something protruding from it. She said it was an envelope with money in it — $26,800 in U.S. currency. A second envelope, with $9,000, was also located in her purse.
The woman told the officers that she was delivering the money to an address in Niagara Falls, Ont., for a friend. The currency was seized and the woman was allowed to return to the U.S. An investigation is ongoing.
