COPENHAGEN: Queen Margrethe II of Denmark urged citizens “not to be paralysed by fear” as she mentioned the past year’s terrorist attacks that hit cities like Nice and Berlin. The attacks “created fear and horror,” she said in her new year’s address.
“But we have learned that we should not be paralysed by fear: life must go on,” the queen said in her televised New Year speech. “We must be steadfast and keep spirits up,” she added.
As in her 2015 new year’s speech, the monarch also noted the influx of migrants to Europe. “War and poverty have prompted many to flee, also for Denmark,” she said. “They have expectations for their new life, and we also have expectations of them,” the queen said.
“The refugees must understand where they have come: to a country where not only the climate is completely different, but the way of life and customs are different and have a long history and deep roots.”
