Customs Court extends physical remand of suspect booked in gold smuggling case

KARACHI: Custom Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi extended the physical remand of a suspect, Abdul Rauf Khan, and sent him to the customs lock-up until January 9, 2017. The suspect was booked for attempting to smuggle six slabs of gold weighting 60 tolas from Dubai to Karachi.

Earlier Investigation Officer Masood A Khan produced the accused before the acting judge on January 1 and informed that the customs staff intercepted the suspect at Karachi airport and scanned his baggage. During the examination, the staff recovered six slabs each weighting 10 tolas from his bags.

The investigation officer informed the court that after the formalities the said accused and gold were taken into custody and an FIR was lodged on complainant by Senior Preventive Officer Masood A Khan. He requested the court to send the accused on physical remand for further investigation.

After the hearing, the court sent the accused on physical remand and directed the investigation officer to produce the accused on January 4, 2017 along with progress report.

It needs to be mentioned that the accused is son of former Jail Superintendent Ammanullah Khan Niazi. According to the prosecution, a case was registered against him under section 2 (s) and 16 of Customs Act 1969, punishable under clauses (8) (9) of section 156 ibid.
