LHC orders petroleum authorities to get Parliament approval on additional tax

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) adjourned the case against the levy of additional tax on petroleum products till next hearing. LHC ordered the authorities to provide cabinet’s approval in this matter. The case was filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Andleeb Abbas.

Justice Aisha A. Malik heard the petition. The counsel for the petitioner, Shiraz Zaka, submitted that as per Article-77 of the Constitution the federal government cannot impose sales tax on petroleum products without approval of parliament adding that 17 percent sales tax is already being charged on petroleum products without approval of parliament.

The counsel for petitioner added that despite fall in prices of the petroleum products in international markets, the government did not provide relief to the people.

The petitioner pleaded the court to restrain the authorities to impose extra sales tax on petroleum products.

The LHC adjourned the case till next date of hearing, which is in four weeks, and ordered the respondents to provide approval of the parliament in this regard.
