SHC to hear petition against construction of Deep Water Containers Terminal

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) will hear a case filed against construction of Deep Water Containers Terminal at Karachi Port Trust.

The petitioner requested the court for a stay on the construction of the Deep Water Containers Terminal, stating the heavy containers terminal will cause problems for the citizen and will also disturb the ecological system in the city.

The petitioner also stated that due to the project, pollution will spread and will create hazards for the sea life. The SHC accepted the petition for the regular hearing and issued the notices to the federal government, Sindh government and Administrator Karachi along with other departments concerned.

The SHC, while issuing the date of the hearing, also asked the petitioner to make party to the Federal Ministry of Commerce in the case. The case has been adjourned for two weeks.

It is pertinent to mention that the port has three berths with a designed draft of 18 meters and operational draft of 16 meters on the other hand world’s biggest vessels, Mother Ship, could be handled at this port.
