MANILA: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) is implementing a mass promotion of its roughly 4,000 employees for the first time in decades as Customs commissioner Nicanor Faeldon recognizes the work of the BOC staff.
Promoting employees would also pave the way for entry-level vacancies that would allow BOC to hire new people in the bureau as part of its package of sweeping reforms, its spokesperson told The STAR in an interview.
“We held an (assessment) exam last Sunday, so this is almost mass promotion. Almost everybody will be promoted. After this we can hire new people and if you introduce fresh blood, reforms would be easier,” said BOC spokesperson Ret. Col. Neil Estrella.
Estrella said for the past 20 years, promotions among BOC employees have not been as often as in other government agencies because the BOC commissioners were focused on other priority reforms such as revenue collections and anti-smuggling efforts, among others.
However, Faeldon wants to change that as he wants to recognize the efforts of the BOC team.
