Bangladesh inflation rises 5.15% in Jan ’17

DHAKA: Inflation increased in the month of January, owing to a rise in rice price, said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

Mustafa Kamal revealed the information while releasing the monthly inflation update of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) at the NEC conference room in Dhaka, reports BSS.   The general point-to-point rate of inflation in January is 5.15 per cent, which was 5.03 per cent in December 2016, says Kamal.

The food inflation increased to 6.53 per cent in January from 5.38 per cent in December while the non-food inflation came down to 3.10 per cent in the month from 4.49 per cent in the previous month.

According to the statistics, overall inflation at the urban level in January declined to 5.57 per cent, which was 6.07 per cent in December. In rural area overall inflation increased to 4.92 per cent in January while it was 4.46 per cent in December. At the rural level, the food inflation jumped to 6.28 per cent from December’s 4.78 per cent, while the non-food inflation declined to 2.52 per cent which was 3.88 per cent in December.

In urban area, the food inflation increased to 7.11 per cent in January which was 6.74 per cent in December and non-food inflation came down to 3.91 per cent in January which was 5.35 per cent in December.
