HOUSTON: Colombia remained the largest importer of bituminous coal to the US in 2016, importing 4.45 million mt, down 7.9% from the previous year, according to US Census data out Tuesday. The next-largest importer was Indonesia, which imported 479,961 mt of bituminous coal in 2016, down 10.9% from 2015.
For the year, US bituminous coal imports totaled 5.27 million mt, down 5.7% from 2015. Metallurgical coal imports for the year totaled 870,823 mt, down 44.1% from the previous year. The largest importer was Canada, which imported 705,448 mt in 2016, down 18.7% from 2015. The next-largest met coal importer was Colombia, which imported 164,498 mt into the US in 2016, down 76.1% from 2015.
